 5th Grade Newsletter  August 31, 2016
Dear Parents,
We are so excited to be back in school!  We are loving your cute kids.  Attached to this letter is a progress report.   Please notice  any missing assignments.   The  Flag codes are:  Mi=missing, La=late, Ab=absent, Ex=excused, In=incomplete, and Co=collected.  We hope to be able to send just a list of missing assignments on a half sheet of bright yellow paper in the future.  Students need to complete and return missing work right away.  We are working at using less paper and would like you go to Power School to check your child’s progress and read the newsletter on our class blogs.  Next time (September 14) we will just send a category total and( hopefully) missing assignments, with a verification form to sign.  If you don’t have your PowerSchool login information you will need to get one from Mrs. Griffith in the front office.  We still have quite a few parents who need to sign the electronic forms for Safe Schools and Computer Use.  Thanks to those who have already signed them. Again, if you are having trouble, please contact Mrs. Griffith. She can help with Power School and electronic signing.
We want to stress the importance of nightly reading and using the class planners.  Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Little’s planner is bright green.  These need to be checked daily to help students be successful.  The planners need to be signed by a parent and returned each Monday.  Also, be encouraging your child to work on Reading Revolution books and reports.  The first book report for Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Little  is due by Tuesday, September  13. (You should have two or three in if you are working toward the higher goals.)  Mrs. Payne’s students use reading response journals instead of planners. They are checked every Wednesday.  Mrs. Payne’s students have a book project due in October.  We have all been working with the district’s new reading and writing program, which we started last year.   We have been impressed with the good language and writing skills the students have brought with them already.
Orchestra will begin next Tuesday, but instruments will not be needed until the next week.  If your child is participating in orchestra please send in the blue registration form tomorrow, if you have not already done so.
All school shirt orders need to be in by Sept. 13.  If you haven’t signed up for the PTA alerts by text or email, you will want to do that soon, so that you will receive the information about the many things the PTA does.  Also, please link your Smith’s shopping reward’s card to South Elementary.  Lin’s cards can also be linked.  We’d love you to send in those box tops, as well.   School Pictures will be on Friday, September 23.  If you want to purchase pictures you must send the packet back by picture day.   All students will have their pictures taken, whether  you are buying them or not.
We are going on a field trip to Cedar Mountain on Tuesday, September 27.  We will be seeing a volcano, Mammoth Caves, and hiking the Alpine Loop at Cedar Breaks.  Students need to wear long pants and sturdy shoes.  They also need a flashlight or headlamp, because there is no light in the cave.  Bringing a jacket and water is also advised.  We leave right at 9:00 and return at 3:25 in time for the busses.  Parents are welcome to come with us.
The next newsletter(blog) and progress report verification slip will be sent home on Wednesday, September 14.  Our first Worker’s Holiday will follow soon after that.  You will get information about it in the September 14 newsletter.
                            Thank you for your support,
Mrs. Williams,  Mrs. Little, & Mrs. Payne
