FIFTH GRADE NEWSLETTER
JAN. 7, 2014

Parents,
We hope all of you had a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, as well.
Can you believe we are already half way through the school year?  Time is really passing us by this year. Today is the end of second term, and therefore, students need to have all of their missing work turned into their teacher by Friday, Jan.9th, before 9:00 AM.  Please be sure to view your child’s grades online, so if they are missing any work, they can be reminded to get those items turned into their teacher.  If your child has missing assignments, they should have a missing assignments sheet with them today to show to you. Everyone now has a fresh start for third term.
We are planning on having our Worker’s Holiday next week  on Monday, Jan. 12.   For those students who have all their missing assignments turned in to their teacher and have an 80% or better, will be going over to CAL Ranch hill, to play in the snow and slide down the hill.  Students will need to bring a large sized trash bag with them on this day.  They will use the trash bag to slide down the hill (No sleds or tubes will be allowed).  Students will also need to make sure they wear the right clothing for this activity. Students will need to dress in layers, and will need to make sure they have a good pair of gloves and snow boots.  If students do not have the proper gear for this activity, we will have to keep them from going, for their own safety.  We have had many kids in the past not bring gloves and have worn only tennis shoes with one pair of socks, and frozen themselves solid within the first 20 minutes of the activity.  The teachers supervising this activity cannot walk back to the school with any student that may be cold and leave the other students unsupervised, so please make sure your child comes dressed appropriately.  We do take hot water over with us to let the students have hot chocolate or cider.  We ask that they bring their own packet of hot chocolate or cider, and we will provide the water and cups .  **(IF we don’t have enough snow on Monday, we will try again on Fri., Jan. 16, and then again on Fri., Jan 23.  If we don’t have enough snow on any of these days, we will do an alternative activity on Jan. 23, and possibly try this activity for the next time.)
Students should be getting pretty good at their typing skills by now, but we ask that they keep practicing. They have a new typing practice sheet today(lesson 7), which is due by next Wednesday.  The writing test will be coming up in February, and knowing how to type will really make this test a lot easier for them to take.
Remember that there will be no school on Monday, Jan. 19th, because of the Martin  Luther King Holiday.
Please ask your child for the bright orange verification slip stating that you have read the newsletter and have viewed your child’s progress report on Power School.
The next newsletter will be posted on Wednesday, January 21st.  Thank you so much for all of the help and support you give us.
                                                                    Sincerely,

Mrs. Little, Mrs. Payne and Mrs. Williams
