5th Grade Newsletter Sept. 9, 2015
Dear Parents,
We are so excited to be back in school! We are loving your cute kids. Attached to this letter is a progress report. If your child has any missing assignments, a half sheet of bright yellow paper will also be attached with the missing assignments listed. Students need to complete and return missing work right away. We are working at using less paper and would like you go to Power School to check your child’s progress and read the newsletter on our class blogs. Next time we will just send a category total and missing assignments, with a verification form to sign. If you don’t have your PowerSchool login information you will need to get one from Mrs. Griffith in the front office. We still have quite a few parents who need to sign the electronic forms. Thanks to those who have already signed them. Again, if you are having trouble, please contact Mrs. Griffith. If you have not yet emailed your child’s teacher, please do so as soon as possible.
We want to stress the importance of nightly reading and using the class planners. Our planner is bright green. These need to be checked daily to help students be successful. The planners need to be signed by a parent and returned each Monday. Also, be encouraging your child to work on Reading Revolution books and reports. The first book report is due by Tuesday, September 22. (You should have two or three in if you are working toward the higher goals.) We have all been working with the district’s new reading and writing program, which we are getting to know a little better. We have been impressed with the good language and writing skills the students are coming to us with already.
The PTA BASH ‘N SPASH is at the Aquatic Center this Saturday, September 12 from 6:00-8:30. Swimming is free, but the other activities require tickets. You may purchase tickets in advance after school tomorrow and before and after school on Friday. All school shirt orders need
to be in by Sept. 14. If you haven’t signed up for the PTA alerts by text or email, you will want to do that soon, so that you will receive the information about the many things the PTA does. Also, please link your Smith’s shopping reward’s card to South Elementary. School Pictures will be on Friday, September 25. If you want to purchase pictures you must send the packet back by picture day. All students will have their pictures taken, whether you are buying them or not.
We are going on a field trip to Cedar Mountain on Monday, September 21. We will be seeing a volcano, Mammoth Caves, and hiking the Alpine Loop at Cedar Breaks. Students need to wear long pants and sturdy shoes. They also need a flashlight or headlamp, because there is no light in the cave. Bringing a jacket and water is also advised. We leave right at 9:00 and return at 3:25 in time for the busses. Parents are welcome to come with us.
The next newsletter(blog) and progress report verification slip will be sent home on Wednesday, September 23. Our first Worker’s Holiday will follow soon after that. You will get information about it in the September 23 newsletter.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs. Williams & Mrs. Little
