5th Grade Newsletter September 5, 2018
Dear
Parents,
We are so excited to be back in school! We are loving your cute
kids. Attached to this letter is a
progress report. Please notice any missing
assignments. This just shows category totals and missing work,
but you can see all of the assignments when you log into Power School. The
Flag codes you may see when you look on Powerschool are:
Mi=missing, La=late, Ab=absent, Ex=excused, In=incomplete, and Co=collected.
Students need to complete and return missing work right away. We are working at using less paper and would
like you go to Power School to check your child’s progress and read the
newsletter on our class blogs. To find our blogs just go to the South
Elementary web page, click on teachers. Just click underneath your child’s
teacher’s picture and the blog will be there. Mr. Sahagun uses a
different web page instead. He has instructions sent via ClassDojo on how
to access his blog. Please sign the verification form stating that
you have looked at grades and read the 5th grade newsletter. We are
sending a copy of our newsletter this time, but you will need to look at our
web pages next time. If you don’t have your Power School login
information you will need to get one from Mrs. Griffith in the front office.
We still have quite a few parents who need to sign the electronic
forms for Safe Schools and Computer Use. Thanks to those
who have already signed them. Again, if you are having trouble, please contact
Mrs. Griffith. She can help with Power School and electronic signing.
We want to stress the importance of nightly reading. Mrs.
Williams and Mrs. Little’s nightly reading is recorded on the bright
green daily planner. These need to be checked daily to help students be
successful. The planners need to be
signed by a parent and returned each Monday. Also, keep encouraging
your child to work on Reading Revolution books. The first Reading Revolution
book report for Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Little is due by Tuesday,
September 11. Mrs. Payne
and Mr. Sahagun use reading journals in class to verify books read. (All
students should have two or three completed books soon, if they are working
toward the higher goals in the Reading Revolution).
Orchestra began Tuesday, but instruments will not be needed until the next week. We
already have 25 students in orchestra, and so there is now a waiting
list.
If you haven’t signed up
for the PTA alerts by text or email, you will want to do that soon, so that you
will receive the information about the many things the PTA does. Also,
please link your Smith’s shopping rewards card to South Elementary. Lin’s cards can also be linked. We’d love you to send in those box tops, as
well. Please send Starving
Students cards or the money back by Friday. We would love it if
each child could sell one, but if they can’t please send the card back.
We are very appreciative of our wonderful PTA, and are excited about our
new science teacher paid for by them.
School Pictures will be on Friday,
September 14. If you want to purchase pictures you must send the
packet back by picture day. All students will have their pictures
taken, whether you are buying them or
not.
We are going on a field trip to Cedar Mountain on Thursday,
September 27. We will be seeing a volcano, Mammoth Caves, and
hiking the Alpine Loop at Cedar Breaks. Students need to wear long
pants and sturdy shoes. They also need a flashlight or
headlamp, because there is no light in the cave. Bringing a jacket and
water is also advised. We leave right at 9:00 and return at 3:25
in time for the buses. Parents are welcome to come with us. Please let us
know if you want to come. We probably have room for 5 or 6 parents per class.
The next newsletter(blog) and progress report verification slip will be
sent home on Wednesday, September 19. Our first Worker’s Holiday
will follow soon after that. You will get information about it in the
September 19 newsletter.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Little, Mrs. Payne
& Mr. Sahagun
