5th Grade Newsletter
February 4, 2015
We are already at mid-term for third quarter. We will be having a Worker’s Holiday next Monday, February 9 in the morning. This will be a Read-a-thon. Students may wear PJ’s if they want, and bring a few healthy snacks. They may bring a blanket or pillow to make a comfortable spot to read and bring good books to read. All missing work is due by this Fri., Feb. 6 in order to earn Worker’s Holiday. Those with missing work, will be able to work on those assignments during the activity.
Our SAGE writing tests will be during the next two weeks. It is very important for students to be here on testing days. All 5th grade students will be taking these tests during the mornings on Thurs., Feb. 12 and Thurs., Feb. 19. Make sure that your child gets a good nights rest and eats a good breakfast on these days. We have practiced writing with prompts at school, and hope that your child feels confident in taking these tests. Please continue to have your child practice typing.
Parent conferences will be the first week of March. Schedules will be sent home in two weeks. Please let your child’s teacher know if you are aware of dates or times that you may have conflicts with.
We hope that you have been able to view some of the Go Math teaching videos. You can go directly to the link on the South Elementary home page. There is one video for each lesson. The after school math homework help is now available on Mon., Tues., and Thurs. in the Library. Students must be picked up at 4:00. All students are welcome to attend.
We will give the spelling test to determine who will be in the Spelling Bee on Feb. 12. Students received a list of 100 words to study. The list is also on the school home page. The school Spelling Bee is on Feb. 20.
We are not having a “science fair” this year, but will be doing a SCIENCE SHARE FAIR. Students will not be judged, but will present their project in class and then set it up in the gym to share with others. We will be talking about the different types of projects that they can do in science class and information about this will be sent home on Wed., Feb. 18. These will be due at the end of March. Being able to present scientific information is a 5th grade standard, so this will be required for all students.
If you have not sent the permission for your child to participate, or not participate in Mrs. Bassett’s presentation about the choking game, please do so. If a letter is not returned your child will not be able to participate.
Each teacher will send information about Valentine’s Day celebrations, which will be held on Fri., Feb. 13.
There will be no school on President’s Day, Mon., Feb. 16. The next newsletter will be posted on Wed., Feb. 18. Please sign the orange verification slip stating that you have read this letter and checked Power School, and return it with your child.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs. Williams, Mrs.Little, & Mrs. Payne
